Abstract:
This dataset contains line data information. This information identifies and delineates the boundaries of stream reaches containing federal and state threatened or endangered aquatic species. The species included in this analysis were limited to species inhabiting primarily lotic, or riverine, habitats including fish, mollusks, and the wood turtle (Clemmys insculpta). Aquatic resource professionals from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries reviewed several data sources in the development of this spatial information. The spatial data used for development include: the existing "Outstanding State Resource Waters" data (1994), the threatened and endangered species point coverage (VDGIF, 4/2002), a hydrography data layer (USEPA Reach Files, v. 3), a county boundary data layer, and a roads data layer(VDOT 1999). Additional data sources included the VDGIF Collections database, regional scientific literature, and professional resource experience. The reaches were delineated based on the presence of a threatened or endangered species and extended to include suitable habitat if known. Reach boundaries were extended to road crossings or to stream confluences to facilitate text descriptions and recreation of the boundaries. No specific upstream protection zones were added.
Purpose:
This information identifies and delineates the boundaries of stream reaches containing federal and state threatened or endangered aquatic species. It is intended as a tool for the management of natural resources in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The absence of data confirming the occurrence of a species within a geographic area does not constitute a negative declaration. Neither the VDGIF nor the contributors of data to VDGIF shall be held liable for any improper or incorrect use or application of the data provided, and assume no responsibility for the use or application of the data or information derived from interpretation of the data. In no event shall the VDGIF or its collaborators be liable for any direct, indirect, or incidental damages arising from the use or application of these data.
